Giant Pool Basketball Toy Set
This hoop set may be marketed as being for kids, but it’s certainly something that people of all ages can enjoy.
The first thing that you may notice is that the hoop is huge – 39 inches tall and 47 inches wide – so it may not be suitable for smaller pools, at least if you’re looking for a challenge that is.
For the price, it’s also great to see that not one but two basketballs are included, so you don’t need to spend more money purchasing them separately. Even better is that the balls are well-designed to give you a great grip, which is invaluable of course when you’re playing in the water with wet and slippery hands. Each ball measures 23” in circumference.
Setting up the hoop is very easy, considering that it is inflatable so just an air pump is required. It is also durable and sturdy thanks to having been made from thick plastic that can take a lot of abuse.
Dunnrite Splash and Shoot
This is arguably the most highly regarded pool basketball hoop on this list and it also unsurprisingly the most expensive, largely in part due to having been made from very high quality materials.
The pole is heavy duty and aluminum powder coated while the base is polyethylene, making it very tough, and has the ability to hold 25 gallons of water. This means that it weighs 200 pounds and has no chance of falling over, however severe the weather may get or when dunking. The rim is made from steel and vinyl coated. It is also regulation sized.
The pole is also adjustable up to 56 inches above the pool deck and can be adjusted in increments. One thing that you may want to keep in mind is that you can’t adjust the height via a slide mechanism. Instead, you have to loosen and re-tighten the bolts. While this may mean that it takes more effort, it’s better this way because it ensures that when adjusted the hoop set stays more stable.
Poolmaster Pro Rebounder
If you’re looking for a non-adjustable yet durable and reliable hoop that is also reasonably priced then this model from Poolmaster is a good option.
It features a hard-body backboard, measuring 34” wide and 25.5” high, and has a polyform base that can be filled with water or sand, making it very stable. In fact, the durability of this set really can’t be overstated.
One family said that the Poolmaster Pro Rebounder kept going strong for 15 years, which really is impressive in this day and age. The PVC hoop measures 14” and a ball is also included
One thing you might want to be aware of however is that some people find installation a little tricky, particularly the part that requires you to place the poles into the base.
The Swimline 9195M is a good alternative to the model from Dunnrite, considering that the height can be adjusted and the set is also less expensive.
Like most models the 9195M’s base needs to be filled with water, and once done it is very sturdy and won’t move an inch when playing. The height is definitely easier to adjust than the Dunnrite model and stability is also pretty good at all adjustment levels. All in all, the hoop is easy to install and can also be relied upon every summer.
The net isn’t the best of quality however, so it may need replacing every now and again. Nets are cheap though, so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
The backboard measures 44” wide and 32” high and a basketball is also included.
Swimline Giant Shootball Inflatable Pool Toy
This inflatable hoop from Swimline is the only other inflatable model that we would recommend. It is slightly smaller than the first model on this list – 45” tall and 36” wide – but it is still large and can even make a good flotation device.
One of the best things about this hoop is definitely just how sturdy it is, being able to take plenty of abuse without any damage. This is down to being made of heavy duty vinyl. It’s also good to see that it is sturdy enough to rarely tip over when shooting hoops.
A single ball is included unlike the first model on this list, so it might be a good idea to purchase another ball, and there are multiple ports for multiple shooters, making it a good choice for pool parties.
Poolmaster All Pro Water Basketball Game
This hoop from Poolmaster is by far the cheapest on this list and for this reason it does suffer from a couple of issues.
However, if you’re on a very tight budget or just want to test the waters to see if your kids enjoy the concept of a pool hoop and purchase a better one down the line, it can be considered as one of the best pool basketball hoops.
The main issue with the hoop is that it tips over quite easily, so it can be a little frustrating to play with after a while. Assembly is also a bit finicky despite the hoop’s simple design.
On the plus side, the hoop is reasonably well-made with its non-corrosive PVC tubing and hand-woven polyethylene net. The hoop has a 21” diameter base and measures 16” high, and a basketball is included.

What is a Pool Basketball Hoop?
A pool basketball hoop is a piece of equipment that is set up in a swimming pool to enable people to play basketball. Of course, you can’t really dribble on water like you can when playing real basketball, but it sure is fun to shoot some hoops in the water
Well-made models should be weather-resistant to a certain extent so they don’t rust. Some are also lightweight and portable, meaning they are easy to take down and bring to a friend’s pool, the local swimming pool, and to the beach.
Why Buy a Pool Basketball Hoop?
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a kid or an adult. The result is always the same – fun for people of all ages. They also have the benefit of keeping kids and adults active instead of relaxing by the pool all day. They are also much cheaper than some other toys and games that can keep kids entertained, like air hockey tables.
While some models cost over $200 you can still pick a basic one up for 30 bucks or so, meaning that they offer long-lasting, inexpensive entertainment for the whole family.
Different Types of Pool Basketball Hoops
There are 3 different types of hoops to choose from. Some are happy with the very simple floating hoops option that also have the benefit of being inexpensive, while others want an adjustable model that is sure to last for many years to come. The choice is down to you. Here is what you should know, however.
Floating hoops are the most basic model. They still offer great fun, but they are unique in the sense that they are inflatable and don’t need to be installed onto the side of the pool. Due to their design, you inflate the hoop, place it in the middle of the pool, and the fun comes from people taking shots and trying to score from all sides.
In order to catch the ball and to make it easy to tell when someone scored, these models also tend to have a platform underneath the hoop to catch the ball.
Fixed location hoops certainly have much more in common with blacktop hoops. They come with stands, backboards, and nets – just like you would find on a basketball court. The only difference is that they are designed for pool use.
The great thing about fixed location hoops is that they resemble the sport of basketball much more accurately, won’t float away like inflatable hoops, allow for a better game when more than two people are involved, and are more challenging. The downside is that they usually aren’t quite as portable and can take a bit of time to install.
Think of adjustable hoops as being the same as fixed location models, but with the addition of being adjustable. This is an important distinction to make because not all fixed location models allow their height to be adjusted, which many people are unaware of. The real benefit of adjustable hoops is that they allow the difficulty level to be changed – lower for kids and higher for adults and more experienced players.
Factors to Consider
Price is always a very important aspect to consider when it comes to any purchasing decision. As mentioned, some models retail for over $200 while others cost as little as $30. Such large variations in the price are down to whether the model is inflatable, fixed, and/or adjustable, and rust-resistant.
Just like any other product, pool basketball hoops are prone to wear and tear, particularly as they will likely be exposed to the elements unless you’re planning to use the hoop in an indoor pool.
Therefore, look for models that are rust-resistant and just generally feature higher quality materials used in the manufacturing process. It’s easy to tell if this is the case – in most cases these models are simply more expensive than their counterparts. Materials that are higher quality include polyethylene and high-impact plastic. Be wary of hoops that are made of generic plastic because they will inevitably break after having hit a hoop hundreds of time.
A model should be designed to be as easy to install as possible. If you want an inflatable hoop then just blow it up and the job is done. Other models, however, are a little more complicated to install, but should still take under an hour to fully set up.
Size & Height
Be sure to pay close attention to the size and height of the hoop. As mentioned, adjustable hoops are great because they can be adjusted for when kids and adults play, and also for inexperienced and more experienced players.
Do you want to take the hoop with you to friends’ houses, the local swimming pool, the beach, on vacation? Well, if the answer is yes then you better look for a lightweight model that is easy to take down and set up.
Keep an eye on whether the set comes with just a hoop or also with other things included like a ball and tools for installation too. Otherwise you will have to purchase these items separately. The best pool basketball hoops often do come with a couple of extras.
