What makes this hamster cage from Litix such a good buy is down to just how much space it gives your hamster. It also provides plenty of ventilation, which is of course one of the most important aspects anyone should look for when buying a cage.

The cage is easy to assemble, which is always a plus, and comes with everything that a suitable habitat for a hamster should come with. This includes a metal wire platform, drinking bottle, feeding bowl, and an exercise wheel.

The cage is manufactured in Belgium and is highly durable. It is also well-designed to ensure that your hamster won’t escape or get stuck in the wiring, as there is little spacing between the wiring.

Many hamster owners complain that the American market just doesn’t cater to selling appropriately sized cages, but this Lixit cage is one of the few exceptions. It also has the benefit of being easy to clean too.

An inexpensive yet one of the best hamster cages comes from the popular brand Habitrail. It provides your pet with more than enough circulation, comfort, and entertainment.

Features include a large plastic door for easy access so you can clean the cage, provide food via the food dish, water via the chew proof bottle, and access your hamster easily; door locks that are very well-designed to ensure that there is no chance of your hamster escaping; a look out deck with ladder; and quiet exercise wheel to keep your pet entertained.

This Habitat from Habitrail is also easy to clean, not only due to its easy access design, but also thanks to the litter guard that ensures messes are kept to a minimum.

We also like how the cage is compatible with any of the company’s other products, so it makes purchasing accessories and knowing that they will fit a much easier process. You must first purchase the company’s Lock Connectors, however.

The Prevue Pet Products SP2005BL has more of a horizontal instead of vertical design with its tri-level design with two access points.

This ensures that your pet hamster is provided with more entertainment than it might have compared with other cages. For example, there are two slide ramps, two platforms, a hideaway dome, and exercise wheel so a hamster’s needs for exploration and entertainment are fulfilled.

The two access points mentioned include a front door and a larger, top-opening door. You should keep in mind, however, that while the doors are well-made a bit of very simple DIY may be required to ensure that the door is kept firmly shut at all times. Not much pressure is needed to open the door right out of the box.

It’s fair to say that the cage is both easy to assemble and easy to clean.

Installing the topper is very simple, snapping together in just a matter of minutes without the use of tools. The topper comes with many features that a hamster needs to ensure its health and well-being. This includes safety ramps, comfort shelves, a water bottle, food dish, a little brick house hideout, and even a pet nameplate so you can personalize your pet’s habitat.

This hamster habitat from Kaytee is a little on the small side, but it makes a great piece as part of a larger set up. Many people are happy enough with using this cage as a standalone habitat however, particularly with the removal of an attachment or two.

The habitat is well-ventilated enough to ensure a safe environment for your hamster and to keep odors to a minimum. Safety is also good thanks to the fact that there is little space between the wiring so your pet can’t escape or get suck, and the door is also secure with its well-made locking mechanism.

A food dish, water bottle, and quiet exercise wheel are included, all of which are easy to clean along with the cage. This is down to everything being easy to disassemble and reassemble.

You may want to keep in mind that there isn’t a whole lot of viewing space, so if you want to watch you hamster play this may not be the best choice.

Hamster Cage Buyers Guide

What is a Hamster Cage?

A hamster cage is an enclosure that is designed to provide the right habitat for those super cute, small furry pets known as hamsters. There are three different types of the best hamster cages that we will get into below – wire, plastic, and aquarium. Cages often come with wheels, tubes, and other accessories to keep, most importantly, the hamster entertained, but also you too.

Why Buy a Hamster Cage?

Why can’t you just put your pet hamster in any old cage? Well, a hamster needs to live in the right habitat to keep it healthy, safe, grow as it should, and in general ensure its well-being. They’re also designed to be easy to clean, meaning less work for you.

Different Types of Hamster Cages

Regardless of whether this is your first time buying a cage, or you are looking for a new one and need a quick refresher, you should know that there are three different types of cages each with their own pros and cons.

Wire

Wire cages are the most common and popular on the market and for good reason too. Ventilation is very rarely a problem, which is very important in keeping a hamster healthy, they are easy to access and clean, inexpensive, and in general just provide a great habitat for you hamster to live and have fun in.

However, keep in mind that hamsters may chew on the wiring, which can cause damage to their teeth. If the wiring is too far apart, hamsters may even get stuck and hurt themselves too.

Plastic

If you’re in a pet shop with your kid and ask him or her to pick out a cage, a plastic cage will likely be chosen. This is because plastic cages tend to be designed with bright colors and just look like they are a lot of fun with built-in wheels and other accessories. Not only does this keep your pet entertained, but kids too, as they can watch their pet play at a distance.

Plastic cages, though, don’t typically provide as much ventilation as wired cages and are harder to clean.

Aquarium

Aquarium cages aren’t really something we would recommend. While they definitely have their advantages, including the fact that a hamster will be unable to escape – a hamster can’t chew through glass, after all – the downsides definitely outweigh this. Not much ventilation is provided, even though they feature holes for ventilation, and a hamster usually doesn’t get much exercise in these cages. They also tend to be quite expensive and accessories need to be purchased separately.

Factors to Consider

There are several factors to consider. Make sure you keep all of these factors into account before making your decision so you can find the best one for you and your pet’s needs.

Price

Owning some pets, like dogs, can be very expensive. Fortunately, owning a pet hamster is cheap, and this even applies to everything needed to keep a hamster safe and healthy, most of all cages. While some of the best hamster cages that cost a couple of hundred dollars and even more, there are many that cost as little as $30-40 too, that will certainly suffice.

Of course, if you have more than one hamster the cage will be more expensive, as you will want a larger cage. The same applies to a cage with many accessories. If you’re just looking for a no-thrills cage with a couple of accessories, then you really don’t need to spend much at all.

Size

As just mentioned, if you have more than one hamster, have a larger breed, or want more room for your cute pet to live and play in, be prepared to spend more. You should also keep in mind your own space constraints in your home too.

Accessories

Some cages are already designed with many accessories, whereas others come with very few. Therefore, ask yourself if you prefer to purchase a cage that comes with many features for one price? Or if you don’t mind buying accessories separately at some point down the line. Remember that a hamster ultimately really does need accessories for exercise and thus health purposes.

Type

As outlined above, there are 3 different types of cages. We don’t recommend aquarium type glass cages, but rather wire and plastic cages. These cages also have the advantage of being more inexpensive to aquarium types and ensure that your pet hamster is kept happy and healthy, particularly when it comes to the amount of ventilation there is.

Easy to Clean

In order to keep a hamster both happy and healthy frequent cleaning of its cage is a must. Therefore, it’s a good idea to purchase a cage that is easy to clean so you are more likely to do so frequently without having to turn it into a chore and putting it off too long.

Safety

Despite your best efforts, if a hamster has an opportunity to escape it will. Not because the hamster doesn’t like you, but because hamsters are very curious animals. Therefore, a hamster’s safety is of paramount concern. Make sure you are able to lock the cage’s doors without any chance of them coming loose, and avoid cages that have too much spacing between the wires.
