If you need to paint furniture there is only one type of paint that you need to concern yourself with – chalk paint, of course!
In a hurry?
This type of paint is able to achieve a beautifully antique finish to your furniture and eliminates the need of having to strip, prime, and sand.
It will also always adhere to furniture, regardless of whether it has been stained, stripped, sealed, or painted before.
You will need a brush for applying the chalk paint. Any old brush won’t do, though. This is because for best results you need one that is specially designed for the job and therefore has dense bristles. Here is the best brush for chalk paint we recommend.
You will also need wax. The one that we recommend and has hundreds of 5 star reviews to its name is by Renaissance Furniture. It can be viewed by clicking here.
Here at the Six List we usually recommend the six best products. In the case of chalk paint though, there are only five that are worth your time. We have therefore only included five products as we did not want to compromise the quality of our recommendations to satisfy meeting a certain number.

Renaissance Chalk Furniture & Cabinet Paint
There really is no two ways about it. If you’re looking for absolutely the best chalk paint, you’ve found it.
This paint from Renaissance is popular with both complete novices and professional painters – something that not many other brands can boast – for its ease of use and results.
Coverage is superior to pretty much any other paint on the market, with only 1 or a maximum of 2 coats required.
The paint is of course non-toxic, but it also contains zero VOC’s and is also hypoallergenic. Perhaps best of all though, is how it has no odor. If you’re sensitive to chemicals this is definitely something that you will appreciate.
It only takes 20 minutes to dry, meaning that you can apply another coat or wax in as little time as possible, enabling you to get the job done quickly.
The paint goes on smoothly with consistent coverage throughout. 40 colors are available.
Rust-Oleum Ultra Matte Interior Chalked Paint
This is another great chalk paint, but you should keep in mind that you aren’t given as many color options as other brands – there are 7 colors to choose from.
The best thing about this paint is just how matte its finish is. It isn’t just matte though, it is also smooth with consistent coverage and impressive adhesion. Due to just how matte it is this means that just two coats are needed at most.
The paint is relatively fast drying, taking about 30-45 minutes to completely dry, and can easily be distressed or sealed, depending on what you are trying to achieve.
The smell isn’t non-existent but it is subtle enough not to bother you. The paint is also easy to clean if you make a mess, requiring just soap and water to remove.
FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Furniture & Craft Paint
This chalk paint only comes in 8 ounce bottles, so if you need to purchase paint for a small job it is a good choice.
There are also over 40 colors to choose from, so you can easily find a color that is perfect for your piece of furniture. It is also very reasonably priced which is always a plus.
Made in the USA, the paint leaves an ultra-matte finish that only takes a single coat to achieve – perfect for those smaller projects. A single coat results in impressive texture and depth.
Unlike other options, this paint from FolkArt does seal and protect somewhat without requiring you to use wax. We still recommend you use wax afterwards, but it isn’t as necessary as it is compared to some other brands.
Amitha Verma Chalk Finish Paint
This is one of the more expensive yet best chalk paints on this list, so we’re sure that the question you want answered is whether the higher price is justified or not?
In our opinion, we would have to say that it is.
While you’re not getting as much paint for the money, what you are getting is paint that goes on very, very smoothly that provides thick, even coverage. Just one coat is required for an ultra-matte finish, so one can also ends up lasting longer. One can lasts for 3-4 medium-sized projects.
The paint is also one of the fastest drying on the market, taking just 20 minutes to completely dry. The odor is very subtle and there are 12 colors to choose from.
The colors also differ somewhat to others in the sense that they have a lighter and fresher appearance that many other brands do not offer.
Chalk Mountain Chalk Furniture Paint
The last paint that makes this list of top chalk paint comes in 16 ounce and 32 ounce cans. There are 40 “Beachy” and “Earthy” colors to choose from.
The paint also works out to be one of the most inexpensive options on this list when you work out how much paint you are getting per ounce.
Rich in color and texture, the paint go on smoothly with great coverage and takes as little as 30 minutes to completely dry. It also has a low odor formulation, making it safe to use indoors.
As with all other paints on this list the finish is ultra-matte although arguably not quite as much as other options. One coat usually suffices but you certainly won’t need to go past two coats.

What is Chalk Paint?
Chalk paint is water soluble and differs to many other indoor paints in the sense that it contains plaster. The addition of plaster is absolutely key because it helps it adhere to furniture, regardless of whether it has been stained, stripped, sealed, or already painted . It can also be used on walls and appliances like refrigerators and tubs just fine.
The paint also has the benefit of being able to dramatically improve the look of furniture even if it needs sealing, you need to cover up a terrible paint job, or it has a lot of wear.
How Should Chalk Paint be Used?
Using chalk paint couldn’t be any simpler. It works just like any other paint – paint your furniture and let it dry. The result is a beautiful, antique finish that other indoor paints can’t easily offer without a lot of know-how and work.
The paint also dries quite quickly, so if you’re under time constraints and need to apply another coat you can do so without having to wait as long as other paints.
The fact that no stripping, sanding, or priming is needed is another huge plus that makes people come back to this paint again and again. This isn’t to say that doing any of these things is never necessary, but more often than not if the piece you are painting is in relatively good condition, you can get away not having to.
Chalk Paint Faqs
Is this paint the same as chalkboard paint?
This is one of the most common questions and it’s easy to see why people think this given the similar names. However, they are not the same thing and have completely different uses.
Do I need to thin out the paint?
As chalk paint is quite thick, it is recommended that you thin it out with a bit of water. You can either pour some paint into a cup and add water, or dip your brush into water and then dip it into the paint. Thinning out the paint is also advantageous because it means that a tub lasts longer.
Is there really no need to strip, sand or prime?
Yep, there is no need and this is something that makes chalk paint so advantageous. We’re not saying that you should never do these things, but as mentioned above treat each piece of furniture on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes stripping, sanding or priming can be beneficial.
Do I need to use seal wax?
You can opt to seal with something else, but it’s a good idea to use wax. This helps to seal in the chalk paint and protect your furniture while also giving it a nice sheen look to it. Waxing should be done only once the paint has completely dried.
Many brands say that you can leave it unsealed if you would prefer, but it isn’t something that we recommend for the reasons listed above.
Do you have any application tips?
There are a few tips that are worth sharing.
Firstly, make sure you use a high quality brush. If possible, use a brush that is designed specifically for chalk paint. These brushes have denser bristles.
Make sure that you paint in the same direction. Doing this ensures that brush strokes won’t show on the finished piece.
It’s a good idea to water down the paint. Not only because it means the tub will last longer, but also because it allows you to finish painting more quickly, as it slides on more easily.
Before adding another coat make sure that the paint is completely dry. This won’t take long.
As chalk paint dries quickly, it is also a good idea to avoid painting in areas of direct sunlight. The warmth of the sun accelerates the drying process, making the paint harder to work with.
Always make sure that you protect the surrounding area. This can be done by laying down sheets of plastic. We can tell you that having the paint adhere to anything other furniture isn’t fun to remove.
Can I make my own chalk paint?
You can but it isn’t something that we would recommend. It can be a challenge to get right and in most cases it is always almost better to purchase from a brand that specializes in chalk paint and other paints. The manufacturers clearly know how to best make it and the hassle of doing it yourself and trying to get it right just isn’t worth it. Opt for one of the best chalk paints listed above.
